Flesh and Ink. Tano Aronica Meets the Ghost of Gesualdo Bufalino

There are evenings when the stage ceases to be a world of fiction and becomes a vibrant threshold between the living and memory. On Saturday, July 4, 2026, at the Loggiato of the Bufalino Foundation in Comiso, this magic will unfold. “The Miracle of the Encore: Fragments of an Imaginary Dialogue”, adapted and directed by Andrea Traina, is a ritual of evocation in which actor Gaetano Aronica finds himself confronting the ghost of Gesualdo Bufalino. To grasp the depth of this challenge, one must delve into Bufalino’s labyrinth. Having survived tuberculosis in his youth, the writer from Comiso lived with the constant shadow of death, transforming his existence into a lucid attempt to exorcise nothingness through the written word. His pen was a chisel; his unmistakable Baroque language, a trench erected to defend himself against the void. Bufalino, essentially, wrote so as not to die. How does one give substance to a man made of paper, silences, and memories? This is where Gaetano Aronica steps in with overwhelming force. His poetics never succumb to academic declamation: his is a theater of the flesh, of sweat, and of feverish emotion. If Bufalino is the architect of the ethereal, Aronica is the craftsman of the tangible. On stage, the actor does not merely imitate the Master, but embodies him, taking his complex allegories and transforming them into blood, breath, and agitation. It is the myth of the performer who, looking in the mirror, glimpses the character within, giving rise to a psychological struggle that explores the “secret wound” from which the very reasons for writing spring forth. Into this tense intellectual face-off bursts the dancer Noemi Castronovo. Called upon to embody the “shards of fairy tales” and the eternal feminine that runs through Bufalino’s work, her presence provides the necessary lyrical counterbalance to the gravity of the word. Where rational torment dissolves into anguish, her body intervenes to restore light, sublimating pain into movement and grace. Ideally foreshadowing the documentary film “On the Threshold of Night”, this event in the series The Engineer of BabelIt reminds us that the most profound words can transcend time. On Saturday, July 4, we will witness this once-in-a-lifetime “miracle of the encore”: that theatrical magic by which, by fusing the restless soul of a great writer with the vigorous body of an actor, art mends the rift of time and, for one night, defeats the silence of oblivion.
